Tips and Tricks
Advantages of the service
There are more advantages than just saving you money and providing a
convenient, instant service:
- Privacy: the international number you dial won't be listed on
your phone bill. Obviously though you should only use the service if you
have permission from whoever pays the bill.
- Avoid call barring: remember, you're dialing a UK number, so
international call bars won't have any effect. That means you can probably
call from work or anywhere. But again, obviously you should have permission.
Tips and tricks
- Going abroad? Don't spend all your money on phone calls!
Let your mates back home stay in touch with you,
give them your phone number (e.g. hotel) and the access number.
Your mum will thank
you too! Remember to check out our Cheap Calls
Spain service if you're going to Spain.
- Mates going abroad? Even if your mates are just going on holiday,
get their hotel's phone number and their room number, and call them
cheaply to catch up on all that gossip!
Remember that although they may have their mobile with them they'll have
to pay for incoming calls too (anywhere from 60p to £1.50 per minute!),
so do them a favour and just call them at the hotel - it's cheaper than
calling their mobile!
- Use our printable cheap calls
guide (PDF). It's free and it lists all our destinations,
their dialing codes and our access numbers. Keep it near your phone and
why not photocopy it for your mates? Plus, if your employer makes
international phone calls you could earn brownie points from the boss
by pointing out our service, particularly during the credit crunch!
- Put up our cheap calls
flyer/poster (PDF) in your office, club, canteen or
anywhere... just make sure you have permission first.
- Send faxes: you can use our cheap calls service to send faxes
as well. If you're using a normal fax machine, just dial our access
number, wait for the initial greeting and then dial your fax number.
Your fax should then be transmitted as normal. If you're sending a fax
from your PC, you may have to insert a pause between the access number
and your fax number. This is usually done by entering a comma, e.g.
"access number,fax number"
Programming numbers into your mobile
There's a simple trick to using the service from your mobile without having
to keep dialing both the access number and the international number every
time you use the service.
Here's how:
Just add a pause between the access number and the international number you
wish to dial.
Let's suppose you want to call your Mum in America. Make a new entry called
'Mum' in your mobile's phone book and then when entering the number:
- Enter the 1p/min access number used for calling the US, i.e. 0844 720 4840.
- Enter a 'pause'. The exact way of doing this depends on the brand of
your phone:
Nokia: A 'p' should appear after * has been pressed 3 times:
i.e. 0844 720 4840 *** will show a 'p'.
Siemens/Panasonic: A '+' will appear after 0 has been pressed and
held.
Motorola/Ericsson/Sony: A 'p' should appear after * has been
pressed and held.
- Now enter your international number in full including 00 and press save.
- That's it: next time you want to call your Mum, just find Mum
in your phone book and press call, and you'll be saving money!
